Basic Health Assessment

Program Overview

Physical and Health Assessment course assists nursing and healthcare students in the development of interviewing and history taking skills as well as skills in physical ex-amination and psychosocial assessment. Students develop basic theoretical and practical health assessment skills across the lifespan with a focus on relevant anatomy, physiology, history taking, examination techniques and documentation. Students develop basic ‘hands on’ assessment skills using a systems approach. Emphasis is placed on recognition of the range of normal findings with some discussion of common abnormalities. Through lectures, discussions, demonstrations and return demonstrations, role plays, and other experiential activities, students integrate learning in order to perform health assessments.

Practicum Placement: The placement is to expose the student to a working environment where theory is put into practice. This course requires full-time attendance working within food service environment.

The student would be able to perform mise-en-place including Peeling/Slicing/Seeding and Dicing fruits and vegetables manually or with the aid of automatic machines. Program Overview

The NACC Personal Support Worker 2022 (PSW) certificate program prepares graduates to provide supportive care to individuals across their lifespan by assisting them with their activities of daily living, including clients experiencing cognitive impairment, physical disability, and mental health challenges.

The range of services provided by NACC Personal Support Workers depend upon the individual needs of each person they support and may include personal care such as dressing, personal hygiene, mobility and other routine activities of living in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act, home management such as shopping, light house cleaning and meal preparation, family responsibilities such as routine caregiving to children and assisting with social and recreational activities.

AIMS College PSW program is based upon the NACC’s (National Association of Career Colleges) Ontario Personal Support Worker 2022 Training Standard released in October 2022.

Also included are some features commonly used for collaboration purposes such as creating distribution lists or groups, cleaning up your system, marking junk mail, and how to check the size of your Outlook data file.

Effective Business Writing: The focus of this course is written communication as it is used in the business world. The course will deal with the theory of business communication while at the same time providing practical examples of andassignments to improve the effectiveness of written communication skills.

Human Anatomy & Physiology: The course teaches students how to recognize the major concepts of Human Anatomy and Physiology.Also gaining knowledge about the body systems functions and structure and understanding their functions in a healthy and diseased state. Students would be able to describe the function and interactions of each body part with other body structures and its role in maintaining body’s internal environment in a stable and functional state.

Medical Terminology: In this course, students are introduced to the medical terms including words and abbreviations identifying major body systems in health and disease. The medical field is high stakes, therefore, special emphasis is placed on spelling and pronunciation to enable students to communicate accurately with patients and colleagues in the health care field. This course involves a lot of practice, case studies, illustrations to build competence in word building techniques in the medical field.

Medical Transcription:: The course of Medical Transcription brings about the fundamentals of Medical Terminology, HumanAnatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology together with the medical transcription techniques to produce accurate, cohesive medical documents which could be used in a variety of medical settings. Students develop skills in medical e-transcription and advanced keyboarding while transcribing a wide range of medical documents/records including but not limited to Referral letters, follow up notes and patient records.

Medical Office Administrative Procedures: This course familiarizes students with common practices and procedures in a modern medical office. Students are introduced to a variety of specialized, entry-level administrative support functions including preparing medical correspondence, medical transcription, medical terminology, organizing and maintaining medical records without compromising confidentiality; and medical e-scheduling and billing. The course strives to impart competence in the preparation of routine medical correspondence, forms and documents.

Medical Billing & Coding: This course emphasizes on the rules & regulations pertaining to producing accurate billing records as outlined by the Ontario Ministry of Health. Students maintain a medical billing and scheduling system to provide support to members of a simulated health care team by performing e-scheduling, generating medical office financial reports, and design/deliver a medical software training session. The course comprises of interactive lectures and extensive practical through which students would be able to generate health claims for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), Reciprocal Medical Billings (RMB), Work place Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), and private practice.

Medical Record Management: This course teaches students to transcribe entry-level medical documents from dictation or from handwritten material (e.g. medical chart notes, progress notes, history and physical examination reports, or other miscellaneous documentation). Special focus is placed on the importance of editing and proofreading within specified deadlines along with the potential medical/legal repercussions and implications resulting from erroneous medical documentation.

Career & Employment Strategies: Students learn how to search for a job, uncover the hidden job market and identify employment opportunities, as well as how to prepare an effective resume and use social media tools.

Practicum: The placement is to expose the student to a working environment where theory is put into practice. This course requires full-time attendance working within a medical office environment.

Upon completing this course, students would be able to:

  • Customer Relation Management.
  • Handling and answering phone calls (internal and external) and transferring calls to the appropriate personnel.
  • Manage patient appointments in consideration with the doctor’s schedule.

Duration: 5 hours

  • Training in CPR and AED Level C (Adult, Child, Infant) for HCP
  • Certification Validity: 3 years (required for Nurses, Paramedics, Doctors and other vocations in a hospital setting)
  • Students earn a CPR/AED for HCP certification
